Art Ritual (April 9- May 28, 2021), is a group exhibition featuring contemporary artwork that explores the ritual of art making. Selected artists include King Nobuyoshi Godwin, Rebecca Kaufman, Ethel Revita, Evelyn Reyes, and Joy Tirade. Each artist takes a ritualistic approach to art making. Using their own forms and mediums, the artworks on view create an event of seeing. Art Ritual will open on Friday, April 9, 2021, with an opening reception 5 to 8 pm.

Raleigh artist King Nobuyoshi Godwin paints numbers as Monet paints dots. While at first glance, the marks simply look like lines, the marks really are numbers. In using repeated numbers he creates texture, pattern, and a larger design.

Bay Area Rebecca Kaufman constructs disrupted optical field paintings with labor-intensive repetitive processes that imply movement where there is none, engaging visceral, sometimes non-consensual viewing experiences. Unlike the op artists of the sixties, Kaufman’s paintings are irreverent and rife with error, indicating rather than denying the human hand.

Bay Area artist Ethel Revita carefully composes each piece so that blocks of solid saturated colors play off of each other for a vibrating effect. The animals and people in Revita's artwork are made up of geometric shapes of various sizes and colors.

Working on one specific shape at a time, the works on view are from her abstracted carrot series. With ritualistic reverence for each aspect of the process, Bay Area artist Evelyn Reyes’ art practice mirrored the repetition and order that were central to her daily life.

Bay Area artist Joy Tirade’s paintings create connections between phenomenology, technology, and feminist theory to explore aspects and properties of human emotion such as love and longing.

From the world reimagined through numbers in Godwin’s artworks to Kaufman’s disrupted optical fields to Reyes’ abstracted carrots, the selected artworks on view each offer a different viewing experience.
