A two-person exhibition featuring Raleigh-based artists Peter Marin and Kelly Sheppard Murray
Charlotte Russell Contemporary is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition In Proximity featuring two Raleigh-based artists: Peter Marin and Kelly Sheppard Murray. Working in different mediums, both artists draw on color, form, and structure. Peter Marin’s abstract work references architecture, landscape, the handmade, sacred geometry, identity and uses the languages of color and abstraction. Kelly Sheppard Murray’s multimedia sculptural work fashions a wide range of polymorphic, multicolored structures that have their roots in natural forms. In Proximity will be on view at Charlotte Russell Contemporary April 22, 2022 until May 24, 2022 with an opening reception on April 22 from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. There will be an interior designer preview, 4:30 to 5:30 PM prior to the opening reception.
Kelly Sheppard Murray’s sculptural works are grounded in the study of color and connective relationships. The objects are connected by color to those nearby, and subtle gradient shifts explore how interdependent the pieces are to one another; if you take away one piece, the sequence is off. Featured artworks reflect on the need to find connection and common ground with those around us while also recognizing that we are part of a larger network or system where we are simultaneously unique but also share similarities.
As a Latino artist, Peter Marin’s intention is to further the discussion on abstraction, moving it from formalist proposals to a more personal vision. Peter Marin’s paintings focus on the language of color and structure through repetition of colorful geometric shapes and forms. To Marin, color is a very important personal idiom that tells his story. His interest in structure is influenced by his father’s work as an architect, who ensured that Peter’s experiences would be rooted in the arts.
