Kelly Sheppard Murray’s multimedia sculptural work fashions a wide range of polymorphic, multicolored structures made from found aluminum and hand-painted with encaustic. The sculptures have their roots in natural forms. She draws from the shapes of plants, moss, lichen, fungi, shells and geological forms.

"I initially started using things I had around the studio, wire, odd bits of wood, wire mesh, and wanting to transform them, I began to coat them with the encaustic. It transformed industrial material into something beautiful, peculiar, and unfamiliar."
My years of taking photographs of lichen, fungus, and these kinds of things started to perk to the top. I was not replicating them, more mirroring the process of nature as things build up over time. Seeing [the curiosities] cluster together as the way things encrust trees... like the cycle of life.
