Charlotte Russell, Owner & Curator of Charlotte Russell Contemporary, A Fine Art Gallery located in the Five Points neighborhood in Raleigh, recently held her grand opening and we got a chance to catch up with her and see the space.

Russell grew up in a family that all loved the arts. Her parents are longtime art collectors and she spent the majority of her childhood exploring museums and galleries. “It took me a long time to get to the space where I am now,” said Russell.  After finishing grad school a decade ago she’s worked numerous art jobs including auction houses, galleries, and nonprofits.

Russell adds, “I really like all different kinds of mediums. I really enjoy process-driven work.”

She primarily works with female artists but not exclusively. What she looks for in new artists is:

  • An artist who she enjoys working with
  • An artist whose vision she sees
  • An artist that can present their work in a cohesive way

“For me, it’s just as much connecting with the artist and their story as it is what’s on view,” said Russell.

As for getting noticed by galleries she suggests:

  • Submit your art to galleries that are a good fit for you
  • Engage with the curator
  • Be strategic when submitting work
  • Find your niche

“I want this to be a space where the community can come and enjoy art. My goal is to create an inclusive space to celebrate artists,” said Russell.
