Curiosities: Kelly Sheppard Murray at CRC Gallery
January 8 - March 26, 2021, opening reception, January 8, 2021, 5 to 8 pm
RALEIGH, N.C. - Charlotte Russell Contemporary Fine Art Gallery is pleased to announce the opening Curiosities, a solo exhibition of sculptures by Raleigh artist, Kelly Sheppard Murray, on view January 8 through March 26, 2021. Featured artworks include Murray's multimedia sculptural work in her series, Curiosities. For her polymorphic, and multicolored sculptures, she draws inspiration from nature such as the shapes of plants, moss, lichen, fungi, shells and geological forms.
As a way of engaging the viewer to think about their fragile relationship with the environment, Murray’s sculptures made from cast-off industrial aluminum and layered encaustics transform the materials of construction into objects reminiscent of the natural world. Collecting hundreds upon hundreds of Curiosities, Murray slowly and deliberately assembles her pieces for installation—each one a unique building block within the visual language she articulates within her exhibitions. The process reflects Murray’s interest in how language shapes our understanding of the world. By developing her own malleable visual idiom, Murray expresses her great curiosity and invites that of her audience. Further, through her careful and patient work day-to-day, she reminds us how small steps can have a significant impact on both our perceptions of the world and our environment itself.
Kelly Sheppard Murray lives and works in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her work has shown work at VAE and Artspace in Raleigh, the Wilma Daniels Gallery, Wilmington, for the Durham Art Guild’s Art@work program to install 4 large groupings at WillowTree Corporate office in Durham for a 6 month exhibit. To follow along with day to day studio projects she can be found on Instagram @kellysheppardmurray_art or for a portfolio of work on her website www.kellys
