EHJ Creative and Charlotte Russell Contemporary are thrilled to announce Shaping Spaces, a two-person exhibition of artwork by Jean Gray Mohs and Pete Sack co-curated by Charlotte Russell and Emily James. Shaping Spaces will be on view at 117 E Hargett Street Hallway Gallery and Studio October 1 through November 5, 2021.

Each working in their own unique mediums and processes, featured artworks by Jean Gray Mohs and Pete Sack weave together unconnected shapes to create a cohesive whole. Shaping Spaces will open on Friday, October 1, 2021 with an opening reception, 5 to 8 pm.

Mixed media artist Jean Gray Mohs’ sculptures on view are part of her Woven Strangers series. This body of work narrates the resilience of the human body and her own health journey. Letting the organic shape, lines, and flow of natural wood guide her process, Mohs creates short gestures with a paintbrush that capture quick movement. This mark-making forms the shapes that represent the inner landscape of the body. She then pieces the wooden shapes together as if a puzzle, much like the process her surgeon took in her own body in 2019. Equally important to the wooden shapes are the missing spaces between, which represent and honor the important people she has lost in her life.

On view are painter Pete Sack’s collection of abstract works that are his response to ambiguity and uncertainty. Drawn to expressionism and color field painting, Sacks layers modern shapes and uses color relationships to create depth on canvas. His process mirrors that of Jean Gray Mohs in the way in which Sack pieces together colors, shapes, forms, and marks as if putting together a puzzle. And like Mohs, his pieces play with uncertainty and balance that exists in the midst of instability.

All works by Pete Sack are courtesy of The Mahler Fine Art.
