Charlotte Russell Contemporary x Hartwell

The first art exhibit in a series of ongoing rotating exhibitions curated by Charlotte Russell Contemporary on view at Hartwell. This grand opening exhibition features a colorful collection of artworks by five artists living and working in the Triangle.

Charlotte Russell Contemporary presents a colorful collection of artworks by artists living and working in the Triangle on view at Hartwell early October through December 2021. This is the first of a series of on-goining exhibitions on view at Hartwell curated by Charlotte Russell.

Featured artists include King Nobuyoshi Godwin, Abie Harris, Mar Hester, Jen Matthews, and Jean Gray Mohs. Each working in their own unique mediums and processes, the works on view showcase the vibrant local art scene.

King Nobuyoshi Godwin (Raleigh, NC) paints numbers as if Monet paints dots. Abie Harris (Raleigh, NC) creates forms and explores their relationships with color, an integral aspect to his painting and drawing practice, as well as his career in architecture. Mar Hester’s (Durham, NC) photo sculptures challenge the traditional means of viewing photography while commenting on our ever-shifting environment. Jen Matthew’s (Raleigh, NC) abstract paintings experiment with layers of uncomfortable color combinations, abstract shapes, and textures. Jean Gray Mohs (Raleigh, NC) mixed media sculptures celebrate the harsh edges of life and closely observe our bodies’ exposure to time and disease.

About Hartwell

Set to open early October 2021,  Hartwell is a curated retail and community space run by husband-and-wife team, Caitlin Ward and Matt Daniels and Managing Partner, Hannah Weisberg. Originally built as M.H’s Grocerteria in the late 1950s by owner, Caitlin’s, late grandfather, this building has served the community for decades as a grocery store, neighborhood grill and convenience store. Caitlin and Matt are looking forward to continuing her grandfather's legacy by restoring this one-of-a-kind property to serve as a retail and community space offering goods from local makers as well as indoor and outdoor spaces to host workshops, events, outdoor maker markets and more.
