I first began painting this [100 Day] series as a way to cope with quarantine. I had moved to Oakland in June 2020 during the pandemic. I felt stuck but at the same time I felt groundless. I was unsure of where to turn creatively but also felt like the world was on fire (also literally on fire in California at some point).

This project gave me a specific focus. One painting a day which is both very simple to do and extremely hard.

I am using this process as a way to rebuild my creative habit, needing to get back into getting into my studio every-single-day. So this helps with that by having one tiny focused goal.
I am also building a new visual vocabulary. As an abstract painter who is inventing shapes. I like to revisit my “shape vocabulary” so that I am not mindlessly recycling shapes. If I do end up keeping the shapes at least they have been considered.
Nine artworks from Joy Tirade's 100 day series are featured in Art Ritual (April 9 - May 28, 2021) at CRC Gallery.
